Questions to Ask When You Have Negative Thoughts

All of us are troubled by negative thoughts. Thoughts which spoil our day and affect our self-esteem. Here are some questions you can ask to challenge and change these unwanted thoughts.

1. What is the evidence which says this thought is true?

2. What is the evidence that contradicts this thought?

3. Where does this thought come from?

4. Who has said this about me in the past?

5. What was their motivation at the time? Does it say more about them than me?

6. Should I allow that person to shape my thoughts and life? Why would I allow them to influence me so much?

7. What is the thought trying to tell me/ make me believe?

8. Why am I allowing limiting thoughts to bring me down?

9. How can I effectively challenge this thought?

10. Am I ready to let this thought or belief go? If not, why not?

11. Am I ready to heal? How do I know have reached this place?

12. How can I let this thought or belief go? Try to be specific and concrete here.

  1. There have been times when I prayed to God in heaven, “Show me what’s really REAL.”

Thank you for the reminder to always check my thoughts. Am I responding to the unrealistic picture painted by others, or being true to my best self? My experience says, despite trauma, one’s best self can still be found. Job one is to find a safe place to rediscover. Thank you for the wonderful advice you offer on your site! 🙏May God continue to bless your work.

    • Yes, despite trauma, one’s best self can still be found. It may be hard to get back in touch with that self – but it is still there. Thanks so much for the encouragement David. Much appreciated. Have a blessed week!!
