The Pain of Separation and Loss

“Your absence has gone through me

Like thread through a needle.

Everything I do is stitched with its colour.” – W. S. Merwin

This beautiful, brief poem captures perfectly how a major loss affects the whole of life.

Everything we do, and every place we go, triggers thoughts and feelings of

‘how things used to be’, of

‘how things are today’ and

‘how we wish they were’.

  1. The poem is very visual. Sewing was one of my mother’s hobbies. She’s been gone for almost eleven years, but there’s still plenty of thread left. Thankfully, that’s not all bad. I can sew some good stuff with it too.
